Settled in 1762, the city of Hallowell at one time was thriving with a variety of business such as shipbuilding, trading, publishing, textiles and granite.

After the 1962 bicentennial celebration, a number of residents formed Row House – the city’s bicentennial organization – and there was a big push to save historic buildings.

In the 1970s, the city started fixing up the downtown and Hallowell started to flourish once again, becoming well-known at the time as an “antique town.”Hallowell Marker

But it was the changes that took place in the 1970s that was the start of the pulse that keeps Hallowell moving today. With a population of less than 3,000, the little city along the Kennebec River just a mile or so south from the Statehouse is full of art, music and continuous festivities for all to enjoy.

Currently, there are several bars and restaurants lined up and down both sides of Water Street, where people flock to listen to live music and enjoy good food, as well as check out the many niche shops and art shows held at restaurants and the Harlow Gallery.

The community does a great job at drawing visitors to town with events such as Old Hallowell Day, musiciansthe Fall Harvest Festival, Christmas in Old Hallowell, Mardi Gras and more. All of these events include music, art shows and activities for the entire family. Old Hallowell Day, which is set for July 21 this year, boasts an elaborate parade in the morning and one of the best fireworks display at night. In between, there’s lots of activities and music galore. Keep abreast of the ongoing events by checking out the upcoming events tab on this Web site or visiting

Stop in and visit Hallowell on any given day or weekend and enjoy the music, art and camaraderie always present and a place where many musicians, artists and fun-loving people have made their home.

In the meantime, be sure to visit some of Hallowell’s establishments.

Catch you around town!
