Plenty of chowder and other goodies at Hattie’s Chowder House
Located at 103 Water St. in Hallowell, Hattie’s Chowder House has established itself as one of the best chowder houses in Central Maine.
The owners, Harriet and David Schmidt, have more than 30 years of experience under their belts, starting with another restaurant in central Maine they opened in the 1980s. They say they’ve got their service and specials down to a fine science.
Fresh seafood is always served when available. One of the most popular dishes at Hattie’s is the lobster stew. The original recipe came from Harriet’s cousin, but Harriet could not resist adding her own flavor to it, as any good chef would.
The lobster stew is so popular, in fact, that people from around the country order it and other chowders from Hattie’s web site and have it in time to serve the next day! www.hattieschowderhouse.com
Harriet and David are often asked what their secret to success is. They assure their customers that there really is no secret. They ask that folks look around and observe how much the employees enjoy what they’re doing.
They love serving up appetizers, dinner, desserts and cocktails, leaving customers full and happy.
Chris Knapp has been the night shift chef at Hattie’s for several years and loves the fast-paced work in the kitchen. Harriet and David meet with Chris weekly to come up with some delicious specials to serve.
Aaron Green manages the bar and restaurant and converses with the folks who pass through. He also lines up music that can be heard on Thursday evenings at the restaurant and during special events.
